Sonya Martin has produced and
directed THE TROJAN WOMEN and RASHOMON in New York City. She served as
company manager for Andrei Serban’s CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE (La Mama Etc);
Anne Bogart’s AMERICAN SILENTS (Raw Space); house manager for Lincoln Center
Festival’s ‘99/Gospel Series; and traveled to the 2000 Cannes Film Festival
with ProWebCast.com. Sonya also has worked as assistant to Broadway
director/playwright James Lapine.
Sonya was an actress in New York’s avant
garde theater scene for many years. She has been a capoeirista for more than
two decades,
studying Capoeira Angola (an Afro-Brazilian martial art) with Mestre Nego
Gato and Mestre Joao Grande, and teaching in New York City. She
also has studied conga with Johnny Almendra. Sonya holds an MFA in Theater Management
from Columbia University and a BA in Theater Arts from the City College of
New York. She is currently at work on
Sereia, a new play
based on
the Bacchae. |
